THE NEXT DAY WAS ANOTHER âmarathonerâ for my fatherâwhat I called it when my father worked all day and night. I was becoming a more-than-regular fixture at the Logan household. Fortunately for my father and me, the Logans didnât seem to mind having me as an adopted member of their family. This meant having frequent dinners at their house, which was fine by meâMrs. Logan was a great cook. I just felt bad that my father wasnât able to enjoy the comforts of a homemade dinner. His dinners often consisted of nuking something in the microwave or cooking something out back on the grill. Quick, easy, and usually cooked in less than ten minutesâthose were the dinners prepared by my father.
That night at the Logansâ, the dinner conversation was extra livelyâMrs. Logan told us how she found a mouse in the garage and almost tripped over Colinâs bike, trying to get away from it. Colin complained about the amount of homework he had and wondered why teachers insisted on giving two tests on the same day. Mr. Logan carried on about his lectures and the grades of his students.
âItâs weird,â he said. âIâm either doing something right, or there is something fishy going on because a lot of the students that were about to fail my class are now doing really well.â
âThatâs great, dear,â Mrs. Logan said.
Only Mr. Logan didnât seem to think so.
âWhat? You donât think theyâre cheating?â she asked.
âDonât you guys ever cheat, you hear me?â Mrs. Logan added. I think it dawned on her that we were in on the conversation; Colin had just been complaining about his schoolwork.
âOf course not, mom,â Colin replied. âJust because I hate homework doesnât mean Iâm going to cheat.â
Mrs. Logan smiled over at Colin and then continued with her questions. âIs there something that makes you think that they are cheating?â
âWell, for one, I just finished grading the last exam, and almost the entire class got a C or above. Only one person failed.â
âAnd youâre disappointed?â Colin asked.
âNo, not disappointed, surprised. Suspicious, I guess. This was a class that had quite a bit of failing students.â
âMaybe they really studied, and itâs finally clicking,â Mrs. Logan stated in an effort to reassure him.
âYeah, dad,â Colin added. âIf I was failing a class, youâd have me doing nothing but study until I pulled my grade up to at least a C. Not that you even let me get a C.â
âMaybe.â Mr. Logan replied.
âObviously youâre not convinced,â I chimed in. âSo, why donât you just quiz them in class? Randomly ask the students you think might have cheated some questions from the exam.â Gosh, Iâm brilliant sometimes.
âThatâs a thought,â Mr. Logan replied, taking my advice to heart. âOnly, it wouldnât prove that they cheated.â
âNo, but it could prove that there was cheating,â I responded, excited about the prospect of a new mystery to solve.
Colin seemed to be on the same brain wavelength as me. âYeah, dad. That way, you can get a better feel about it.
